Most people only hire a lawyer a few times in their life. These questions help you understand who you would be working with and what to expect.
- Do you regularly handle matters like mine? Ask how much of their work is in this area of law.
- Who will do the work? Find out whether you will deal with one named lawyer, and who covers when they are away.
- How do you charge? Ask for the fee arrangement and an estimate in writing before work begins.
- What are my options? A good lawyer explains the realistic choices and risks, including doing nothing or settling.
- How and when will you update me? Agree how you will hear about progress, and how quickly calls and emails are usually answered.
Be cautious of anyone who promises a particular result. Every case depends on its own facts, and an honest lawyer will tell you what could go wrong as well as what could go right.
You can also check that a lawyer is licensed with the bar association or law society where they practise.
