A first volunteer shift is mostly about learning how things work and meeting the people you will work with. Nobody expects you to know the routine on day one.
Before you arrive
- Wear comfortable shoes and clothes you do not mind getting dusty or splashed.
- Bring a water bottle, and tell the coordinator about anything that affects what you can lift or how long you can stand.
- If you are helping in the kitchen, tie back long hair and expect a short food safety briefing.
During the shift
Most new volunteers start alongside someone experienced: sorting donations, checking dates, packing parcels or setting tables. Ask as many questions as you like. Treat everyone who comes in for help as you would a guest, and keep what you hear private.
Afterwards
Tell the coordinator what you enjoyed and which times suit you. Regular volunteers make planning much easier, but most charities are glad of help once a month too.
