Choosing a wedding band to sit beside your engagement ring

Close-up image of intertwined hands showcasing elegant wedding rings, symbolizing love and commitment.

Your wedding band will sit next to your engagement ring for years, so it is worth trying them on together before you decide.

Shape

A straight band can leave a small gap under a raised setting. If you want the rings to sit flush, ask about a shaped or notched band that curves around the setting, or choose an engagement ring with a lower setting.

Metal

Many people match the metal of their engagement ring. Metals of different hardness rubbing together can wear the softer one faster over time, so ask your jeweller what they recommend for your pair.

Width and profile

  • A band of similar width to your engagement ring usually looks balanced.
  • A rounded inside edge (often called comfort fit) slides on more easily than a flat one.
  • If you work with your hands a lot, a slimmer, lower band may be more comfortable.

Timing

Made-to-order bands can take several weeks, so start looking a few months before the wedding and leave time for engraving or a final fitting.
