A good coworking space can make your working week calmer and more social. The wrong one can feel like a noisy café you pay rent for. Before you sign up, it helps to know what to look for, and to see the space at the time of day you would actually use it.
Start with the practical basics
- Location and travel: how long the trip takes on a normal weekday, and whether there is bike storage, parking or a station nearby.
- Access hours: when the front desk is staffed and when members can get in with a key or fob. Early starters and late finishers should check both.
- Internet: ask whether there is a wired option and a separate guest network, and try a video call during your visit.
- Places to take calls: phone booths or small rooms keep the open space quiet. Count them against the number of desks.
Read the membership terms
Ask for the membership agreement before you join and check the notice period, any minimum term, deposits, what happens if prices change and whether you can switch plans. Check which extras cost more, such as meeting room hours, printing, guest passes or mail handling.
Try it before you commit
- Book a tour and ask to see the quiet zone, the kitchen and the meeting rooms.
- Buy a day pass and work a normal day there: notice the noise, light, temperature and chair comfort.
- Ask what kind of people work there and whether there are regular events.
- Write down two or three spaces side by side and compare the total monthly cost, not just the desk price.
The best space is the one you look forward to going to. If you can picture yourself there on a grey Tuesday morning, that is a good sign.
