Riding with a group for the first time can feel daunting, but most shop rides are relaxed and welcome newcomers. Pick a ride that matches the distance you can already ride comfortably, and tell the ride leader it is your first time.
What to bring
- A helmet and front and rear lights.
- Water and a small snack for rides over an hour.
- A spare inner tube, tyre levers and a pump that fits your valves.
- A phone and a card or some cash for the café stop.
Riding in a group
- Ride predictably: no sudden braking or swerving.
- Point out potholes and call out when you are slowing or stopping.
- Leave a small gap to the wheel in front until you feel at ease.
- Ask the leader to slow down if the pace is too high. That is what the regroups are for.
Check that your bike is in good order a day or two before the ride, especially the tyres and brakes. Then enjoy it: the best part is usually the coffee at the end.
