Many family carers keep going for months without a proper break. Respite care means someone else steps in for a while, so you can rest, see friends, go to your own appointments or simply sleep.

What respite care can look like

A few hours each week: a regular afternoon off, while a caregiver keeps your relative company at home.

A day or a weekend: for a family event, a short trip or a chance to recharge.

Longer cover: a live-in caregiver while you take a holiday or recover from your own illness.

Making the first break go well

Start small. A short first break helps everyone get used to the new routine.

Share the little details: routines, favourite foods, what helps when your relative feels unsettled.

Leave contact numbers, and agree how you would like to hear from the caregiver, then try not to check in too often.

Plan something for yourself, even if it is just a walk or a nap. A break works best when you actually take it.

It is normal to feel guilty about taking time for yourself. Rest is part of caring well: it helps you stay patient, healthy and able to keep supporting the person you love. Ask local carer support groups, too: they can be a good source of advice and company.

Family carers often put their own needs last.
