Both are sensible; the right choice depends on the instrument and the player.

When renting makes sense

Children grow out of small violins and guitars quickly, so renting a fractional size is often cheaper than buying several in a row. Renting is also a low-risk way to try an instrument for a term.

When buying makes sense

If the player is committed and has reached a full-size instrument, buying can cost less over time.
