Choosing a plant milk for your coffee

More and more guests ask for plant milk in their coffee. Each one behaves a little differently in the cup.

Oat

Creamy and slightly sweet, with a neutral taste that lets the coffee come through. Barista versions steam into a smooth foam, which is why oat milk is a favourite for flat whites and lattes.

Soy

Rich and full-bodied, with a gentle bean flavour. It foams well, but can separate in very hot or very acidic coffee, so baristas often steam it a little cooler.

Almond

Light and nutty, with a thinner texture. It suits iced drinks and lighter roasts, but makes a less creamy foam.

A note on allergies

Soy and almond are common allergens, and oat drinks may contain gluten unless the pack says otherwise. If you have an allergy, tell the barista before you order and ask which brands the café uses.

Plant milks taste, foam and blend with coffee in different ways.
