Everyone else seems to know where to put their mat and what the teacher means by “downward dog”. The good news: every regular was a beginner once, and a good class is set up to make newcomers feel at home.

Before you go

Pick the right class. Look for classes labelled beginners, all levels, gentle or hatha. Faster flowing classes are easier once you know the basic poses.

Book ahead. Many studios keep classes small, so reserving a mat online or by phone saves a wasted trip.

Wear comfortable clothes you can stretch in. Leggings or soft trousers and a t-shirt that stays put when you bend forward are ideal.

Eat lightly. Most people feel better with a small snack an hour or two before class rather than a full meal.

When you arrive

Aim to arrive ten minutes early. You will usually take off your shoes at the door, and you practise barefoot. Most studios lend mats and props such as blocks, straps and blankets; the teacher will show you what to bring to your space.

Tell the teacher it is your first class, and mention any injury, health condition or pregnancy. They can suggest simpler options before you start, so you do not have to explain in the middle of a pose.

During the class

Classes often begin with a few minutes of quiet breathing to settle in.

The teacher calls out the poses and usually demonstrates them. It is fine to glance at your neighbours.

Move at your own pace. If something hurts or feels wrong, ease off or rest in a comfortable position.

Most classes end with a few minutes lying down in stillness, often called savasana. Stay for it if you can.

Afterwards

Notice how you feel, drink some water and ask the teacher any questions. If you enjoyed the class, try to come back within a week or so: the second class almost always feels easier than the first.

If you have a health condition, an injury or are pregnant, check with your doctor or midwife before starting yoga.

Nervous about your first class?
